An elderly lady evaded prosecution recently for peddling drugs in order to pay for cat feed.
No, this isn't some new trendy name for Mephedrone, but the strife of a 75-year old dutch lady seen throwing something from her car when spotted by Maastricht police not wearing a seatbelt. The unconvential distributor, when challenged on police findings (a considerable package containing cocaine), stressed that it was to pay for the upkeep of her many cats.
This story comes only months after a Netherlands man handed himself in to police for the possession of 2400 ecstasy tablets.
The bizarre incident came about when the 46-year old, who spent two decades collecting ecstasy pills in various shapes and colours as a hobby, turned to police for help when they were stolen - because some were said to be poisonous.
The unidentified man reported the theft despite the illegal nature of the situation, because he had concerns that of the 2400, 40 red-and-white of them were in fact deadly. With a street value of approx. €10,000 (Euro's), prosecutors were initially unsure how to charge him.
"Given that the pills have disappeared, there's no evidence to support a possession charge," said police spokesperson Esther Naber.
